When my mom died back in February, my wonderful friends Karen and Bob wanted to send me something. I really didn’t want flowers or anything like that. Or soup. (The new gift for anyone grieving apparently.) So they sent me a gift certificate to Buccan/Imoto. Considering I moved to West Palm Beach in July of 2019 and still haven’t been to Buccan or Imoto, this gift certificate made a lot of sense. I’m a retired food blogger, for Pete’s sake! (I met Karen and Bob back in Chicago around 2010 because Karen and I both had blogs about travel and dining out!)
This morning, it occurred to me — I should spend the gift card. So I drove down to Buccan on Dixie and unsuccessfully tried to find a parking spot on the same street. Denied.
I had to park a block south, which was fine but man was it hot. And I did not bring my hat.
Throughout all of this, I wondered…What does Buccan mean, anyhow? Well it is a word! As a verb, it means to smoke strips of meat. As a noun, it means the wooden apparatus that smokes the meat. Who knew?? (I love learning new words. It’s a thing for me.)
Placing my order at Buccan was easy. I got the beef carpaccio sandwich. Gift card accepted! I actually got the lunch box so I could try their home made potato chips and their chocolate chip cookie.
The hard part was the waiting. I think it took about 25 minutes to get my lunchbox. I noticed a lot of people pull up in cars and hop out to pick up orders. Ordering online seems to be the way to go. There’s one sad bench to sit on here but otherwise, you are just hanging out on the sidewalk, looking a little desperate for a sandwich, fighting for the two inches of shade left at 1 pm on a Sunday afternoon.
I was going to eat the sandwich at home but as soon as I got back in my car, it started to pour rain. So I figured I would eat some of the sandwich in the car while I waited for the rain to stop and man, let me tell you, this sandwich is fantastic. So so good. I don’t know what sort of magic they are working it, but it WORKS. The carpaccio was delicious and the bread in the sandwich was just right. The CRISPY ONIONS ARE GENIUS.
(Later in the day, when I went to finish the sandwich the bread had gotten a little rubbery. So…don’t delay in eating your sandwich.)
I am not a pickle person but I took one bite just to see. Not for me but that’s just me and pickles. (I do like tiny gherkins though.)
The chocolate chip cookie was excellent but very flat. Still excellent, however!
The chips were good but maybe a little undercooked in the middle. I will forgive them for this.
That sandwich though…it was EXCELLENT.
The Verdict: I hope you’ve enjoyed my review of Buccan’s sandwich shop on Dixie in West Palm Beach. I can totally see what all the fuss is about and why everyone is always writing reviews of Buccan’s sandwiches and making Tik Toks. BELIEVE THE HYPE! I will need to go back and try something else. Thankfully, I still have a balance on my gift card!
